Future of Amulet of Nyrac
(Preface: No changes to the game will be made until *after* the voting period for 7DRL 2023.)
Thank you so much to everyone who has played this game. I've already got a few bits of feedback from people and it's just great to hear that even a handful of people enjoyed it. I just wanted to make this post to talk about the future of the game and where I'd like to take it moving forward.
I have hidden the Linux download for AoN. I'm not really sure why it isn't working for some people, but I'm hoping that I'll have it figured out by the next update. I've decided to just hide the download for now. Turns out it works well in Wine anyways.
As for next steps and the future of the game, I really would like to tweak the game so that it is much more balanced. Right now a big problem the game has is a lack of balance. Runs are contingent on finding a rare item and just bulldozing through enemies. I'm currently working on something that will help me balance out combat, along with item and enemy stats. Once I have a better understanding of how to balance the game (it won't be perfect, never will be) I can then move forward with adding new content.
I like the idea of this game being subversive. I want to maintain the same level of humor in the game, but not being *too* overly tongue-in-cheek. It's a fine balance that is hard to describe but I feel confident I'll be able to maintain that balance over time. Something that would be fun for me would be to simply start adding unique systems or items into the game. For example, in my local build, I recently added "fishing" holes, where you have a chance to catch fish from them, but you only get so many chances before the water hole dries up. I imagine it as an "uncommon" encounter, where you may not run into one until you're quite a few levels deep. As you may have noticed, AoN doesn't have an over-arching theme. References made in the game range from internet memes, to real life musical artists, and any sort of thing. A big inspiration (and honestly, where I basically ripped off some of the items) is the game Kingdom of Loathing. I really enjoy the kind of humor that game has, and I want to capture a similar feeling with AoN.
Please feel free to share any questions or suggestions you have! I'm excited to share a new version of the game with you all.
Take care,
Chris
